When it comes to your beauty routine, one of the best places to turn to for fresh products is your kitchen. My friend, a dermatologist in KL, claims that coconut oil is known for its fatty, nourishing and moisturizing properties. While it may seem a tad unconventional to use a product you cook with for your skincare, coconut oil can do wonders so we’ve listed the ways to incorporate it into your beauty routine.

Makeup Remover

Coconut oil is perfect for removing makeup. Dab a cotton ball into a small bit of the oil and wipe it around your eyes to take off even the most waterproof, 24-hour smoky eye. Be careful not to get the product in your eye, as the oil can mix with your eye’s natural saline solution and cause a mild irritation. Coconut oil is better at removing makeup than many harsh soaps or solutions – and will leave your skin feeling soft and moisturized.

Oil Pulling

It may seem a little nuts, but coconut oil can be used to whiten your teeth through a process called oil pulling. To brighten your smile, swish a tablespoon or two of coconut oil in your mouth for  2 to 15 minutes. The oil has been said to naturally pull stains off your teeth, leaving your smile brighter and whiter. When time is up, spit, rinse, and brush your teeth with regular toothpaste.

Hair Mask

Dry hair can be one of the most frustrating things to manage. Before washing, rub coconut oil between your hands and rub it on your hair, focusing on areas that need a little extra moisture. Throw your hair in a bun and let the coconut oil work its magic for at least an hour. For some extra love, sleep with it in your hair overnight. Wash your hair with shampoo, give it a good condition, and feel the difference the coconut oil makes to help keep your hair healthy, shiny and soft.

Lip Moisturizer

During the cold winter months, lips can become dry and chapped. For silky, smooth, kissable lips, rub a tiny bit of coconut oil on. The large size of the molecules from coconut oil can irritate some with sensitive skin if you use it as a face moisturizer but coconut oil can work wonders to help keep lips soft and free from cracks.

For those who love DIY manicures, we know that the cuticles can be one of the most difficult parts of perfecting a manicure. To keep your mani in tip-top shape, rub a small bit of coconut oil on your cuticles to keep them soft. Try it right before bed and the coconut oil will have more time to soak in your skin and keep your nails flawless.
